About Us

Our Background  |  Our Team

Founded in 1972 by John Newton, Soundmirror is a fully digital recording and post-production company specializing in the "natural" recording of acoustic music as well as sound for syncing to visuals.

Soundmirror's orchestral, solo, and chamber recordings have received over 45 Grammy nominations and awards as well as special commendations from the prestigious Gramophone and Stereophile publications.

Designed for ultimate efficiency and comfort, Soundmirror's studios are among the finest post-production facilities available today. The studios are also a proving ground for cutting edge equipment (the first Lexicon Opus and Sonic 24-channel editor were installed and tested at Soundmirror). We are also one of the very few companies offering 48-channel DSD recording and post-production.

Soundmirror has recorded for every major classical record label including Albany, Analekta, BMG, Cambria, CBS, Chandos, Decca, Denon, Deutsche Grammophon, Angel-EMI Classics, Erato, Harmonia Mundi, Koch International, N2K, ECM, Naxos, New World, Nonesuch, Philips, Phonogram, RCA Red Seal, Sony Classical, Telarc, Teldec, Virgin Classics, and Warner/Elektra.

Additionally, we have mastered sixty highly acclaimed multichannel SACD reissues of the historic RCA Living Stereo series for Sony BMG.

John Newton has been and continues to be a true trail-blazer in the world of digital recording. In1981, he became head of the east coast office of Soundstream, the pioneering digital recording company founded by Thomas Stockham. A high point of this association was the making of the first Soundstream 8-track digital recording in 1982. After Soundstream's premature demise several years later, Soundmirror stepped in to continue providing state-of-the-art digital recording services for the major record labels, which were then converting their entire catalogs from the analog to digital format. In 1987, Newton continued a long professional association with Philips by going to Holland for a year to upgrade and streamline their recording department.

Newton worked for four years with Sony and Philips in the development of the SACD, a high definition multi-channel format with greatly improved resolution, three dimensional sound, and clarity far beyond that of traditional compact discs.

Soundmirror currently works with the Boston Symphony and several other large orchestras to help develop their media strategies by archiving their concerts for future commercial release, Internet downloads, and broadcasting. We also produce both local and nationally syndicated radio broadcasts for a number of these orchestras.
