The
popularity of surround-sound home theatre has created a tremendous opportunity
for new higher-resolution recording formats. Super Audio Compact Disc,
or SACD, is a high-resolution music format developed by Sony and Philips.
SACD represents major advances in music playback by making a dramatic
improvement in the resolution of digital audio; many listeners who consider
digital sound to be harsh or too bright find SACD to sound more like
analog playback. SACD also makes it possible to achieve high-resolution
surround-sound and stereo playback from the same disc; each SACD can
contain a stereo CD layer, playable on any CD player, plus an SACD layer
with stereo and surround SACD programs. These three separate programs
on a single disc open up tremendous creative opportunities for artists
and producers. For acoustic recording, surround playback moves us much
closer to a full re-creation of the experience of "being there".
